What it Takes to Turn a Red Carpet Into An Annual Spectacle
BET’s LeToya Glenn-Bacon knows how to get it done.
The BET Awards’ red carpet kicks off to the biggest night in Black entertainment. It’s also a 3-hour event that takes nearly a year to organize.
“We start planning next year’s show directly after the current show ends,” explains LeToya Glenn-Bacon, director of communications and public relations for BET Networks. “We really ramp it up six months before, when we start thinking about the acts ... by the week of show, oh my God, pray for everybody.”
Glenn-Bacon gives us a backseat view of the frenzy in the latest episode of the Viacom series BTS, which takes viewers behind-the-scenes of the making of Viacom’s biggest brand events and programming moments.
Part of Glenn-Bacon’s role is to ensure the red carpet runs smoothly, press is able to get access, and the award show’s biggest moments receive considerable media attention. This year, Cardi B, DJ Khaled, Lizzo, Mary J. Blige, John Legend, Lil Nas X, and host Regina Hall all walked the carpet, which was blue in honor of the late rapper Nipsey Hussle, who died in March.
“It takes a lot of people to pull something together like that, but to see it come to fruition you’re like, ‘Wow that was amazing,’” she says, adding that it makes her love coming to work at BET every day. “It’s the only awards show that’s for us by us. We always have these amazing moments. It’s the biggest night in black entertainment and culture.”
